This book is a rich compilation of 100+ images taken by photographer Biff Henrich over the course of fifty years in his adopted city of Buffalo, New York. It celebrates his deep affection for the city and his appreciation of the extraordinary detail of its built environment. Through his eyes and lens, we are invited to look again at sites, familiar or perhaps new to us, with curiosity and wonder.
Biff Henrich has played an important role in the Western New York art scene both as artist and arts administrator.
Henrich got his first camera in 1971 while attending Hamlin University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He later transferred to Hiram College in Ohio, receiving his BA in 1975. He attended the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester and then University at Buffalo for his graduate studies, receiving an MFA in 1978.
Born in Erie, PA, Henrich has been a proud member of the Buffalo community for nearly fifty years. Living among Buffalo’s rich history and architecture created an inspiring landscape for Henrich’s work.
Henrich has exhibited extensively at a variety of galleries
and museums including Artists Space, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, California Museum of Photography, Contemporary Art Museum of Houston, PS 1, and the Visual Studies Workshop.
His work is part of numerous private and public collections across the country, including the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Castellani Art Museum, Light Work Gallery, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Henrich has been honored with two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Most recently, he received an artist grant from the New York State Council on the Arts in support of this book.
